Day 21: We Should've Packed a Raft!
Posted by the girls on Tuesday, April 26, 2011
We weren't sure if we'd be able to bike today since the weather forecast included scattered showers all day. We decided to shorten our ride for the day and just attempt to make it to Lietchfield, only 40 miles away, instead of Falls of Rough which would have been about 60 miles. It was raining in the early morning so we took our time getting ready. As we were almost packed up, Mark Davis showed up at our site again, this time with a fellow cyclist, Steven, and a print out of the maps we needed to plan our route. He showed us a different route than our planned one, warned us of the hills, and they carried on their way. On our way out, we stopped off at the camp store where we had a picture taken and did a mini-interview about our trip for the local paper.
Once we were on our way we had to cross the Green River by ferry, and as soon as we were off it, we encountered the first big hill (over one-mile long)! After that it was rolling terrain with a couple of tough climbs, but it was a beautiful ride. We crossed over the Nolin River, which had a dam and some amazing scenery.
At about mile 28, we took a shortcut down a gravel-like road. We were about 3 miles in when the road ahead was completely flooded. Rebekah bravely waded out to see how deep it was. She wasn't quite in the middle before it was almost up to her waist, which would be almost chin-height for Emily! So we had to turn around and go back onto the main road, adding an extra 6 miles to the day's count. From there, it was not too long before we reached Lietchfield. We rode through the town looking for a place to stay, when we saw the Alexander Hotel. The owner, Jim Dinwiddie came out to greet us. He let us know that his hotel wasn't open for business yet, but told us we could stay there free of charge if we wanted. Well, of course, we didn't have to think twice! The rooms weren't ready for guests, but he cleaned out a room and a bathroom for us and we got settled in.
After we were all cleaned up, Jim offered to take us out to dinner at the best restaurant in Lietchfield. It was an Italian restaurant and it sure was good. Emily had cheese ravioli, Michelle had chicken marsala, and Rebekah had a bread bowl with spinach/artichoke fetticini inside. Yummy! We wanted dessert, but were too stuffed to even try.
A special thanks to Jim Dinwiddie for hosting us and treating us to an awesome dinner!!!!
