Day 29: The Steamboat Classic Triathlon
Posted by the girls on Monday, May 2, 2011
Today was our first day of volunteering! We had planned on volunteering earlier, but weren't able to do so because we had to re-route and change our itinerary. Somehow we ended up back on our original schedule which had us in Cape Girardeau on May 1st for the Steamboat Classic Triathlon. This was the 27th year for the event. It consisted of a 450-yard swim, 15-mile bike and 5-mile run. All three of us were assigned different tasks; Rebekah was in charge of the team exchanges (this is where people participating as teams had to trade the ankle timing chip), Emily directed racers in the bike rack area to make sure they used the correct exit, and Michelle was the hydration partrol leader. We all had a great time helping out and cheering on the participants. At the end of event, we enjoyed a free lunch of pizza, subs, and cookies.
We thought that we could bike 20 or 30 miles after volunteering, but this weather is not cooperating. The afternoon was filled with rain, rain, and more rain. The roads of Cape Girardeau are so full of water; there is simply no where left for this water to settle. So we opted to spend one more night at Judy's house. Judy drove us to the public library so that we could use the internet and scanner for some odd n' ends. Since almost every restaurant is closed on Sundays in Cape Girardeau, we ordered take-out Chinese. It was surprisingly good, but the company was even better. We love listening to Judy's stories...especially those about biking. She has done a bike tour on every continent except Antartica and Asia. She will be doing the latter next April when she does a tour in Bhutan.
A very special thank you to Judy for letting us extend our stay here in Cape Girardeau. We are so fortunate to be warm & safe indoors while it is pouring out there. Tonight definitely would not have been a good night to camp out; everything would have been thoroughly soaked and our spirits would have also been dampened.
