Day 44: A Pleasant Ride
Posted by the girls on Tuesday, May 17, 2011
We left Nickerson early and headed toward Larned, KS. We were so appreciative to have favorable winds. Although they weren't strong, they were at least blowing in a better direction. The combination of flat roads and kind winds allowed us to increase our mileage. Instead of staying in Larned, we decided to go further, to Rush Center.
We stopped at the public library in Larned to look up information about Rush Center. While there, we talked to a friendly librarian named Donna. Not only did she give us a lot of information, but she invited us to stay at her house, which was 30 miles away from Larned. That was perfect. We thought a couple more hours of biking would be feasible. Instead of going north to Rush Center, we went west to her house, near the town of Burdett. The last few miles were on a dirt/gravel road, but we managed to make it to their house in one piece. Our daily mileage was 93; it sounds tough, but honestly, the shorter days with heavier winds were so much worse.
At Donna's house, we got a tour from her daughter, Allison. We were able to shower (which was wonderful after not having showers yesterday), do laundry, cook, and relax.
Thank you so, so much to Donna, Don, and Allison for hosting us! You made our evening so comfortable and relaxing. We will not forget your hospitality!!
