Day 47: A Windy Evening
Posted by the girls on Saturday, May 21, 2011
We left our hotel at 10am (taking our time to get ready). We knew we only have 47 miles to bike and sort of favorable winds. Most of the winds were coming at us from the side, but once in awhile we'd get some decent gusts behind us that would give us a little boost. The terrain was flat as usual, but today a gradual incline was noticeable. We made it to Tribune, KS with plenty of time to stop at the library before it closed. We got some useful information from the librarian (but this time no offer to stay at her house). We camped at the city park near a little gazebo. It was a nice spot, but terribly windy. We pitched our tents and headed to the supermarket in town. When we returned, one of the tents had completely uplifted itself (all 6 stakes had been pulled out) from the winds. We found the tarp that had been underneath blown all the way across the road (luckily the fence around the tennis court prevented it from blowing any further). We re-staked the tent, but the ground was so hard that it was difficult to get them in far enough. Once again, it uplifted itself while we were cooking/eating dinner. Since there were no restaurants in town (well, there was one, but no vegetarian options for Emily), we cooked a meal of Hamburger Helper lasagna sans the ground beef. We added some frozen broccoli which made for a fairly tasty dinner. Since it was so windy outside, we headed into our tents earlier than usual; by 7:30pm we were all snuggled up, ready for bed. This is a new record for our earliest time to call it a night.
