Day 48: The 9th State: COLORADO!
Posted by the girls on Saturday, May 21, 2011
When we woke up, the winds had died down a bit and both tents were where we had staked them! We had a bit of headwind today, but it was nothing compared to the winds we had in eastern Kansas. We were still able to make decent progress without getting discouraged. After 16 miles, we reached the Kansas-Colorado state line. Of course, we had to take some photos. We tried our best to climb onto the sign; some random truckers enjoyed watching our efforts. After getting some acceptable poses, we continued on to Sheridan Lake, CO. Here, we took a pit stop and ate our lunch; unfortunately, our bagels were moldy, but we ate them anyway). Once again, we had a gradual incline all day. It wasn't horrible, but combined with the winds, it definitely slowed us down. Shortly after crossing into Colorado, we met two other bikers headed east. The brothers-in-law, John and John, were headed to Yorktown, VA from Santa Cruz, CA. They seemed to be very experienced bikers who had previously done at least one trans-Am bike trip.
After about 58 miles, we arrived at our destination: Eads, Colorado. This tiny town didn't have much to offer us; the free camping was in the smallest park we've been to so far. However, we are not complaining; free camping is always appreciated. As usual, there were no showers and the toilets were a bit of a walk. We searched around town to find a shower, but no such luck. Guess we'll just have to be stinky until tomorrow.
It was also difficult to find a restaurant. The few that we found, were all closed. Eventually, we back-tracked and found one open restaurant. We weren't expecting much, but were pleasantly surprised by the tasty salad bar they offered. We also ran into our Swedish friend, Jonathan. He and Linda got a hotel in Eads because Linda was feeling sick. Jonathan joined us for dinner and we shared some great conversation.
After eating, we were ready for bed. We washed up as much as we could in the sink, brushed our teeth, and settled into our tents to read.
