Today we left Grand Canyon National Park and headed east. The first 30 miles or so of our ride were actually within park boundaries. It was not overly hilly, but we were all suffering; Rebekah still has her road rash, Michelle has huge blisters on both of her heels from hiking, and Emily has achy muscles from her extra-long hike yesterday. With a few pit stops, we were able to push ourselves through. We stopped at the Desert View area and looked down into the canyon from the watchtower. We also stopped at a scenic viewpoint, but were too tired to walk to the actual overlook (we still got a decent glimpse into the eastern end of the Grand Canyon). Throughout the day, the landscape became less and less forested and more and more dry, sandy, and rocky. There are very few towns out here, so we have a lot of long days ahead of ourselves.
After 55 miles, we finally reached our destination: Cameron, AZ. This town of 900 people, does not have much to offer, but we were happy to get there. Behind the Conoco gas station, there is a tiny camping area called Junction RV Park. The tent spots were available for $10 and 10-minute hot showers for $2. We also took advantage of the reasonably-priced laundromat right next door.
